The Riviera Maya is gearing up for winter: hotels renovating rooms, new projects on the way and, in the meantime, a low season that leaves good pricing opportunities for anyone planning ahead.
What's making news this week
The organized hotel sector in the Riviera Maya has started renovating more than 2,000 rooms so everything is ready for the start of winter season, and the Quintana Roo Tourism Department expects about 14 hotel developments to open during 2026, with more than 10,000 new rooms projected through 2028. In Tulum, Moto Fest 2026 is getting ready — one of the year's most anticipated motorcycle gatherings. September and October remain low-occupancy months, which means good rates for anyone quoting now for winter.
Must-do activities
- Akumal — bay snorkeling to see green sea turtles in their habitat, with a certified guide.
- Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve — a UNESCO World Heritage site south of Tulum, with wetlands, lagoons and boat tours.
- Aktun Chen cenote — a stalactite cave and crystal-clear cenote near Akumal.
- Puerto Morelos — a coastal town with a protected reef close to shore, ideal for snorkeling without a boat.
- Playa Paraíso, Tulum — one of the region's most photographed beaches, with the Maya ruins nearby.
Best spots to visit
Away from Fifth Avenue, Puerto Morelos keeps its fishing-town rhythm: a pier, colorful boats and a quiet waterfront for dinner with fresh fish. It's a great alternative if you want to unwind without losing easy access to Cancún and Playa del Carmen.
