Cancún is enjoying a calm stretch before high season: shorter lines, more availability and a cultural calendar that fills up ahead of Day of the Dead.
What's making news this week
Next week, October 21–23, the 38th edition of the Cancún Travel Mart takes place, already confirming 178 companies from 18 countries. Meanwhile the destination is going through a pronounced low season: the airport has operated for weeks with fewer flights than usual and hotel occupancy is below last year's, which means more availability and a great moment to compare options calmly. And Hanal Pixán, the Maya Day of the Dead tradition, is on its way, with activities October 30 to November 2 in Puerto Juárez, Parque de las Palapas and the municipal cemeteries (it's worth confirming schedules with the city).
Must-do activities
- Hanal Pixán in Puerto Juárez — altars, processions and a catrina parade, with the traditional night-of-the-souls dinners of the Maya tradition.
- Playa Las Perlas — a public beach in the Hotel Zone, calm and easy to reach, ideal for an unhurried morning.
- El Meco Archaeological Zone — a small Maya site north of the city, with its temple facing the Caribbean and far fewer visitors than other sites.
- Ventura Park — a park with ziplines, slides and water attractions, a good option for families.
- Day trip to Holbox — a car-free island with fine sand, shallow water and, with luck, whale sharks in season.
Best spots to visit
For a different getaway, Holbox makes a full day from Cancún (about two and a half hours by road to Chiquilá, plus the ferry): sandy streets, sunsets over the lagoon and a very relaxed atmosphere. If you'd rather stay close, El Meco is a good morning complement before the heat.
Where to stay: the top-rated hotels

Where to eat
For Mexican food and tequilas, La Destilería is a Hotel Zone classic; Mocambo remains a seafood reference downtown; and Los de Pescado is a good pick for fish tacos and casual seafood.
